The Solar Farm Connectivity Challenge

Brief outages triggering $1M shutdowns.

Roughly $1M every time the satellite blinked

A remote desert solar farm was losing approximately $1M in revenue every time a brief Starlink outage triggered an automatic 24-hour shutdown from the Independent System Operator. Solar farm connectivity depended on a single path — and when that path blinked, the regulatory clock started. Backup LTE was in place, but solar farm Starlink failover broke the VPN to the ISO because the public IP changed.

Failover that broke things instead of fixing them

The resulting 5–7 minute reconnect blew past the ISO's 1-minute re-establishment rule. Multiple vendors and large consultancies had worked the solar farm VPN failover problem for nearly a year without resolution. Every proposed fix addressed speed — none addressed the root cause.

It was not a speed problem; it was an identity problem

The underlying issue was not how fast the path changed. It was that the network identity changed when the path did. The ISO's VPN was bound to a public IP, and that public IP changed every time traffic moved from Starlink to LTE — making reliable solar farm connectivity and ISO compliance structurally impossible without re-architecting the approach entirely.

CONTRIVIAN LIGHTHOUSE™ ARCHITECTURE

The Solar Farm Connectivity Solution

Persistent identity across every path.

Diagnose the actual problem first

Contrivian identified the true root cause: not failover speed, but identity loss during the path change. Within hours of access, the diagnosis was clear — solar farm VPN failover was breaking because the public IP changed, not because the switch was slow. The fix was making sure the IP seen by the ISO never changed.

Dual-tunnel Lighthouse architecture

Contrivian deployed a dual-tunnel Contrivian Lighthouse™ architecture — one tunnel over Starlink, one over LTE — both terminating at a nearby data center behind a fixed public IP. The ISO's VPN now sees a single persistent identity regardless of which underlying path carries the traffic. Solar farm SCADA connectivity and remote monitoring internet traffic are both maintained continuously, even through complete primary path failures.

Transparent to the customer's network

From inside the solar farm's network, nothing changed. The same VPN configuration, the same routing, the same operational procedures. The architecture was inserted underneath the existing environment — fully transparent to the SCADA and telemetry layer above it.

Continuous oversight with NorthStar™

Contrivian NorthStar™ provides continuous telemetry and lifecycle oversight for solar farm remote monitoring. When a path transition occurs, the customer's NOC sees it immediately; the ISO does not, because nothing visible to the ISO actually changed.

The Outcome

Shutdowns eliminated, revenue protected.

The architecture delivered immediate results that a year of vendor work could not — and established a new standard for solar farm connectivity and ISO compliance:

ISO-triggered shutdowns eliminated

24-hour automatic shutdowns eliminated — approximately $1M in losses avoided per event.

Path recovery in under two seconds

Path transitions complete in as little as 1.5 seconds; detection threshold set at 15 seconds — well inside the ISO's 1-minute rule.

Persistent VPN session

VPN session to the ISO remains unbroken through brief Starlink interruptions, carrier congestion, or full path failover events.

ISO interest in fleet adoption

The architecture blueprint is now under evaluation by the ISO for broader fleet-wide adoption across multiple generation sites.

Revenue Protected
Seamless Network
Fleet-Ready
ISO Compliant

Where Else This Fits

Solar farm connectivity built for any grid-connected site.

Renewable generation sites requiring solar farm ISO compliance connectivity under ISO or RTO rules

Solar farm SCADA connectivity with fixed-IP VPN dependencies

Remote industrial sites where solar farm Starlink failover breaks upstream sessions

Solar farm remote monitoring internet over active-active multi-modal WAN

Any environment where regulated counterparties demand persistent identity

Looking Ahead

What this deployment unlocks.

The persistent-identity pattern is now a Contrivian reference architecture for any environment where a regulated counterparty demands a stable VPN session over connectivity that, physically, must change paths. The ISO's interest in fleet-wide adoption suggests a much larger footprint ahead. A standard 72-hour clean-telemetry test is now part of every new-site go-live.
